I've arrived!

So here I am, safe and sound in India. Although when I booked my trip the timing seemed to make perfect sense (leave Friday evening, missing minimal amounts of work/arrive Saturday night leaving me all day Sunday to adjust before having to show up at the office), I'm quickly discovering that arriving on Sunday isn't ideal. Normally there are meals prepared for you at the guest house, but not on Sunday. There are three other Googlers sharing this apartment, but I think they're probably out traveling for the weekend, because there is no one to be found around here. As such, I helped myself to some cereal (which I poured onto a paper towel since I couldn't find a bowl) and a box of orange juice for lunch. Unless I find my roommates, dinner will probably consist of a protein bar - good thing we scoured Ann Arbor looking for just the right ones before I left!

Slight inconveniences aside, my travels went smoothly. Left Detroit at 6:30 PM ET, and arrived approximately 8 hours later in Frankfurt, after a sleeping surprisingly well on the flight (although by the time dinner was served and cleared, there were only a few hours to sleep before they woke us up for breakfast). The Frankfurt airport was quite large and a bit confusing - the Germans could benefit from incorporating moving sidewalks into their airports. From Frankfurt I had another 8 hour flight, during which I tried my best not to sleep too much (to fend off jetlag as much as possible), and I landed in Hyderabad around 11 PM local time. Customs was a breeze; no questioning whatsoever - they simply collected the immigration form we filled out on the plane. After a mild scare that my luggage didn't make it (mine was one of the last to hit the carousel), I easily found my driver and we headed to the apartments. I'm glad my flight arrived late and that there were few cars on the road - driving laws here seem to be taken more as guidelines than hard and fast rules. Lanes are optional (drivers honk/flash their brights when coming up behind someone who has decided to make use of two lanes simultaneously) and we encountered a few people driving on the wrong side of the road. I have a feeling my subsequent car trips here might be adventures in and of themselves.

I was completely exhausted by the time we reached the apartment, and was quite pleased to settle in for the night. I slept for nearly 12 hours and it was amazing :)

The apartment itself is pretty standard - it actually looks a bit like some of the Indian apartments I've seen on House Hunters International. I have my own bedroom and bathroom, and there's a wall airconditioning unit in my room that I can control as I wish. I was pleasantly surprised with very good water pressure in the shower, although I will have to get used to remembering to turn on the hot water 10-20 minutes before I want to shower. Here are a few pictures:

That's all for now! Thanks for reading :)

  1. I love the hanging couch thing. I'm going to guess that nobody ever uses it. Like hammocks.

  2. I would use it!!! Same as I use hammocks a lot when they are available -- the only good thing to do in them is read. No chore there :)

Those drivers sound like the cabbie I had the other day, yikes.

  6. To settle the couch dispute - I haven't seen anyone using it yet, nor have I used it myself. There are 4 of us who share the apartment, but I almost never see anyone in the common areas. I'll keep you all posted if I ever do see someone use it haha
